Getting into B-School — Retake GMAT After Admit in Top School

From: peterLost
To: All
I'm admitted to a top-5 school My post-mba goal is to find a Consulting job preferably in a M/B/B/Del/etc). My gmat is not stellar (<700), but I think I can improve it in 30 points or so

Do you think it is worth to do so? Would a "low" gmat (high 600s) decrease my chances of finding a job in Consulting?
From: JinShil2
To: peterLost
In short, your 690 SHOULD be fine. But it is on the low side of those M/B/B hire.

I think if you can raise your score substantially (30 pts of more) with minimal effort, then go for it. But I wouldn't spend more than 20-30 hrs MAX since I don't think it has enough utility.

thanks for your advice :)

I agree with Jin Shil but am slightly more encouraging of a retake. While you are no doubt in an enviable position school wise, I wonder (and don't know the answer) if in schools without grade disclosure if GMATs are weighted more to select people. Granted getting into a top school is a big deal by itself, but not everyone gets an interview that wants one there either. Suggest you email the school's consulting club.
From: blindreason
To: peterLost
Agree w/ Jinshil. As far as I know, consulting recruiting is really a lot more about the networking you do once you start school to get an interview spot and how well you do on the interview. I would regard the GMAT score to be more of a tiebreaker for most people.

To: peterLost
no, this is stupid and a waste of time. people telling you to retake dont actually go to business school.

let me add a bit of info and tell u that i know people that are interviewing with M for summer internships with <700
Getting into B-School — Foreign Students in US MBA

From: linoooo
To: All
Hi guys,

Having visited a bunch of US B-Schools, I have been surprised to find that few foreign students I have met had NO previous US experience. Some had a Bachelor from a US college, or had worked in the US prior to the MBA. Some even had a US passport even though they were counted as "foreign student" as they had a double nationality.

What do you think ? What are your findings ?

Thx

Which schools did you visit ?

It's very commom that students have a international experience ( live, work ) especially in famous schools. During the admissions sessions I observed this question too
From: linoooo
To: Vasco
Hi Vasco,

I have been to Columbia, MIT, Ross, Booth and Anderson. When I met foreign students there, I was surprised to find that a significant part of these foreign students had already a US experience (had worked or studied). Of course, they had an international exposure (citizenship...) but they were not completely new to the US culture and methods wen entereing the MBA programme.

Cheers

Thanks for you return.

I´m living in Latin America and here is very commom the applicants who have lived abroad for years or months.

ex: High school or exchange program (6 months)

Do you have any other comments about these schools ? facilities, students profile etc.. especially in UCLA?

Regards

Vasco.
Getting into B-School — Kelley: Zero Application Fees????

From: indianguy
To: All
Hi everyone.
The Kelley School of Biz (Indiana University) has zero application fees on submission of online application.

Does this mean that the college is really desperate to attract quality and in reality is not really a decent school? Also are there any other 'top-25' programs with zero online application fees?

Help will be much appreciated.
From: hdcdude
To: indiaguy
So, let's see: you are considering spending two years of your life in b-school, and $150,000 in tuition and other costs. And you are actually concerned with how you can save $200 on application fees?

Focus on the best schools that fit your needs the best. If you are going to make such a big decision for yourself, don't let application fees come in the way. You don't choose a car based on which one comes with a free keychain...

Yes, some schools will offer $0 application fee to attract more applicants (which reduces the acceptance rate, and thus eventually the ranking of the school), but that's not necessarily what you should care about. You should simply focus on applying to the best schools where you think you have a shot...
From: Vasco
To: hdcdude
ok, but what your opinion about the school ? Brand recognition in USA, strength etc. Especially, because in the mid-west there are schools like Ross, Kellogg, Booth

thanks !
From: indianguy
To: hdcdude
thanx for replying.

not concerned about the 200 dollar fee at all. was just curious about whether other colleges in the top 20 were doing this too (cudnt find any other).

Also, if u r from the US, have u got any credible source that can tell me something more abt the college beyond rankings? Something that can tell me whether it really is a top 20, as ppl in India dont seem to hav heard abt it (am talkin abt the i-bankin, PE, senior management crowd).

For example, Cox is ranked 13th this yr but am sure many applicants will be sceptical.

Look at career reports for job placement on BW and search linkedin to see where graduates work. If those are the types of jobs you are interested in, good, if not then you have found your answer. As I hope you've already concluded, Kelley is less prestigious than Kellogg, Booth, and Ross. Kelley is a top 20-30 school whereas those three are top 5-12--which means they attract higher caliber candidates and recruiters.

  B-School Insider
Dear Reader:

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year from the entire Bloomberg Businessweek B-Schools team. As years go, 2010 wasn't half bad: the job market for MBA talent began to recover, several business schools found new leaders, and two others overhauled their curriculums, charting a bold new course for the future. Here's hoping that 2011 will be a happy and prosperous year, for B-schools and beyond.

If you've been busy opening presents or popping Champagne corks and haven't paid a visit to the B-Schools Channel recently (you know who you are) you have a lot of catching up to do. Over the past two weeks, we've published a roundup of the top B-school stories of 2010, a special report on b-schools in China, a ranking of the top MBA programs by academic specialty, an interview with Nancy Sims, who heads up the Toigo Foundation, about b-school diversity, and a feature on a new company started by a Stanford grad, part of our continuing series on b-school entrepreneurship.

So pull up a chair. You've got some reading to do.
