Weekend Sleuth: Merry Christmas and Happy Trading
By Jonas Elmerraji
December 24, 2010

Dear Penny Sleuther,

Take a break from trading… the markets are closed today in observance of Christmas.

Long weekends like this are a welcome change from the normal breakneck pace of the markets. After all, it’s not difficult for stock indexes to become out of whack as investors buy into major sentiment swings — especially during the normally hectic weeks surrounding year-end.

A reprieve from trading is important for the same reasons that stocks can get halted following an irrational move — it provides investors with an opportunity to temper their market outlooks with economic data and company fundamentals.

We’re approaching 2011 on a high note right now, and a three-day weekend could be a good opportunity to springboard stocks into higher ground early in January. In the meantime, expect lower than normal trading volumes next week as folks abstain from stocks in favor of their families…

Here at the Penny Sleuth we’ll be doing the same, and publishing on an abridged schedule next week. That said, keep a lookout for some solid trading insights to end the year.
